Let’s Hope We All Remain Peaceful
The Winter Olympics will be held February 2014 in Sochi, Russia for the first time. The Olympics haven’t been held in Russia since Moscow held the Summer Games in 1980. That is best remembered because it is the year the US-led boycott around 50 countries from competing. However, since the collapse of the Soviet Union Russia has re-emerged as a world power and the 2014 Olympic Games will give the world a chance to see a “new Russia” Sochi’s mayor told Time magazine.
The organizers of the event have been quoted as saying it will be “the most compact Winter Games in the history of the Olympic Movement.” Two locations will house the activity. The mountain cluster and coastal cluster. A new train service has been installed to make the trip between the two venues shorter. The coastal hub will house the indoor activities such as hockey and figure skating, where as the mountain cluster will host the skiing and snowboarding competitions, and such.
The action kicks off February 6 with snowboarding, figure skating, and freestyle skiing before the opening ceremony on February 7. The Games will last until February 23. You can find Sochi’s main webpage about the Games, here. NBC also has a teaser for the upcoming games as well as the All-Time Winter Standings.
